Bergamot Essential Oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus bergamia (Rutaceae), the small, fragrant citrus grown almost exclusively on the Calabrian coast of southern Italy, with smaller production in the Ivory Coast and India. Too bitter to eat, the fruit is grown purely for its peel oil - the most important citrus in fine perfumery.

Aroma: fresh, sparkling and elegant citrus with a distinctive sweet floral-tea heart from linalyl acetate, light spicy-green facets and a soft, slightly bitter dry-down. More complex and longer-lasting than lemon or orange; the smell of Earl Grey tea.

Uses: the classic opening note of eau de cologne, chypre and fougere perfumery - present in the vast majority of fine fragrances - and the flavour of Earl Grey tea. In aromatherapy it is the great balancing citrus: uplifting yet calming, used for anxiety, stress and low mood. Also used in soaps, candles, diffusers and room sprays.

  • Botanical name: Citrus bergamia Risso & Poit.
  • Plant part / method: fresh peel, cold pressing
  • Key constituents: limonene (25-45%), linalyl acetate (25-40%), linalool, gamma-terpinene, bergapten (trace furanocoumarin)
  • Note / family: top - citrus, aromatic, floral
  • Blends well with: lavender, neroli, jasmine, rose, geranium, clary sage, vetiver, oakmoss, patchouli, sandalwood, musk

Safety: strongly phototoxic (bergapten) - IFRA limits 0.4% in leave-on skin products; avoid sun exposure after skin use; bergapten-free (FCF) grades are non-phototoxic. Keep fresh and dilute.

Available in 100gm, 500gm, 1kg & 5kg. 100% pure, undiluted essential oil - no carriers, no synthetics.
