Guaiacwood Essential Oil (often spelled guaiac wood) is steam-distilled from the dense, resinous heartwood of Bulnesia sarmientoi (Zygophyllaceae), a slow-growing tree of the Gran Chaco region of Paraguay and Argentina, where it is known as Palo Santo. The oil is unusual in being semi-solid at room temperature - rich in the sesquiterpene alcohols guaiol and bulnesol - and liquefies gently on warming.

Aroma: soft, sweet and balsamic-woody with a delicate rosy, tea-rose nuance and a faint smoky-resinous, honeyed depth. Gentle and close-wearing, but extraordinarily tenacious.

Uses: a classic soft base note and fixative in perfumery - traditionally used to extend and round off rose oil and valued in floral, chypre and oriental compositions for its quiet, long-lasting woody warmth. Also used in attars, soaps, candles and incense; in aromatherapy it is calming and grounding.

  • Botanical name: Bulnesia sarmientoi Lorentz ex Griseb.
  • Plant part / method: heartwood, steam distillation
  • Key constituents: guaiol, bulnesol, alpha- & beta-eudesmol, guaiene
  • Note / family: base - woody, balsamic, rosy
  • Blends well with: rose, geranium, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli, oakmoss, labdanum, ylang ylang, neroli

Safety: non-toxic and generally very well tolerated; dilute before skin use. Bulnesia sarmientoi is CITES Appendix II - sourced responsibly.

Available in 100gm, 500gm, 1kg & 5kg. 100% pure, undiluted essential oil - no carriers, no synthetics.
