Gurjun Balsam Essential Oil is steam-distilled from the oleoresin ("gurjun balsam") tapped from the trunk of Dipterocarpus turbinatus (Dipterocarpaceae), a towering rainforest tree of India's north-east, Myanmar and Indochina. The balsam has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, varnishes and as a base in Indian attars.

Aroma: soft, dry and woody-balsamic with a light peppery-spicy freshness from its high beta-caryophyllene content and a faint smoky-resinous undertone. Clean, mild and tenacious - a quiet wood rather than a loud one.

Uses: a versatile and cost-effective woody-balsamic base note in perfumery, widely used as an extender and fixative for sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and oud accords and as a natural source of beta-caryophyllene. Common in soaps, candles, incense and air fresheners; in aromatherapy it is grounding and calming.

  • Botanical name: Dipterocarpus turbinatus C.F.Gaertn.
  • Plant part / method: oleoresin (balsam), steam distillation
  • Key constituents: beta-caryophyllene (major), alpha-gurjunene, alpha-humulene, alpha-copaene, caryophyllene oxide
  • Note / family: base - woody, balsamic
  • Blends well with: sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, oud, frankincense, labdanum, black pepper, clove, rose

Safety: generally well tolerated; keep fresh and sealed (oxidised oil can sensitise) and dilute before skin use.

Available in 100gm, 500gm, 1kg & 5kg. 100% pure, undiluted essential oil - no carriers, no synthetics.
