Nagarmotha Essential Oil (also sold as Cypriol) is steam-distilled from the dried rhizomes of Cyperus scariosus, a perennial sedge (Cyperaceae) that grows wild in the marshy riverbeds of Madhya Pradesh, India - the only Cyperus species cultivated for perfumery. Known in Sanskrit as Nagaramustaka, it has been prized in Indian attars and Ayurveda for centuries.

Aroma: deep, dry and woody-earthy with pronounced smoky, leathery and dry-amber facets, a peppery bite from rotundone (the molecule behind black pepper's spice) and a faint animalic-musty nuance unique among natural oils. Often compared to vetiver, patchouli and incense - but drier, darker and more exotic.

Uses: an outstanding base note, fixative and "naturaliser" in oriental, amber, woody and oud perfumery, widely used in modern niche fragrances and traditional attars. Also used in incense and agarbatti, premium soaps and candles. In aromatherapy it is grounding and meditative.

  • Botanical name: Cyperus scariosus R.Br.
  • Plant part / method: dried rhizomes, steam distillation
  • Key constituents: cyperene, cyperol, cyperotundone, rotundone, alpha-copaene (sesquiterpene-rich)
  • Note / family: base - woody, earthy, smoky
  • Blends well with: vetiver, patchouli, oud, sandalwood, cedarwood, frankincense, labdanum, iris, rose, saffron, black pepper
