Nutmeg Essential Oil is steam-distilled from the dried kernels (seeds) of Myristica fragrans (Myristicaceae), the evergreen nutmeg tree native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia and now cultivated in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Grenada and Kerala. The same fruit yields mace (the red aril) - a related but distinct oil.

Aroma: warm, sweet-spicy and aromatic with a fresh, slightly terpenic-peppery top, a soft woody body and a faint earthy-sweet nutmeg depth. Cosy and festive, less sharp than clove or cinnamon.

Uses: a classic spice note in oriental, fougere and masculine perfumery, where it adds warmth without the harshness of clove, and a favourite in spiced and festive soaps and candles. In aromatherapy it is warming and stimulating, used at low levels in massage blends for fatigue and muscular tension. Food-grade nutmeg oil is a traditional flavour.

  • Botanical name: Myristica fragrans Houtt.
  • Plant part / method: dried kernels, steam distillation

Safety: contains myristicin and safrole - use at low levels, always dilute, never ingest and avoid in pregnancy.
