Patchouli Essential Oil is steam-distilled from the dried, lightly fermented leaves of Pogostemon cablin (Lamiaceae), a bushy tropical herb cultivated in Indonesia (Sumatra, Sulawesi), India and China. Unusually, the oil improves with age - well-aged patchouli loses its harsh green-camphor edge and becomes smooth, sweet and rich.

Aroma: deep, rich and earthy - sweet, musky-woody with facets of damp earth, dark chocolate and a faint camphoraceous-herbal edge, mellowing into a smooth, sweet, balsamic-woody base. One of the most recognisable scents in the world.

Uses: an indispensable base note and fixative in chypre, oriental, fougere and woody perfumery - from classic chypres to modern "clean patchouli" blockbusters. In aromatherapy it is grounding, sensual and calming, and it is traditionally used in skincare. Also used in attars, soaps, candles and incense.

  • Botanical name: Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth.
  • Plant part / method: dried fermented leaves, steam distillation
  • Key constituents: patchoulol (25-35%), alpha-bulnesene, alpha-guaiene, seychellene, norpatchoulenol, pogostol
  • Note / family: base - earthy, woody, musky
  • Blends well with: bergamot, rose, geranium, lavender, clary sage, sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood, frankincense, labdanum, vanilla, oakmoss

Safety: non-toxic and generally very well tolerated; may stain fabrics - dilute before skin use.

Available in 100gm, 500gm, 1kg & 5kg. 100% pure, undiluted essential oil - no carriers, no synthetics.
